Misspelled name on your flight ticket: what to do and what it costs to fix

You booked the flight, the confirmation arrives, and only then do you notice it: a letter missing from your surname, first and last name swapped, or a nickname instead of the name on your passport. It is one of the most common booking mistakes and one of the most stressful, because at the airport the name on the ticket has to match your travel document.

Which mistakes can usually be fixed

Minor typos

Many airlines allow one or two mistyped letters to be corrected for free or for a small fee, as long as it is clearly the same person. Rules vary by airline and fare, so start by reading the conditions of your booking.

Swapped or missing names

A missing middle name or names in the wrong order can often be fixed too, sometimes with a handling fee. It is best done before online check-in.

Changing the traveler

What is almost never allowed is transferring a ticket to a different person. If the error is so big it looks like another person, you will probably need to cancel and rebook under the fare rules.

How to act without losing money

Check the confirmation as soon as it arrives

In the United States, a Department of Transportation rule requires airlines to let you cancel or correct a booking at no cost within 24 hours of purchase if you booked at least 7 days before departure. Other countries have similar policies, but not all do.

Contact whoever sold you the ticket

If you bought through an online agency, the correction goes through them and may add their own fee. If you bought directly, contact the airline with your booking reference ready.

Compare with your passport

The name must appear exactly as in the machine-readable zone of your passport, with no nicknames or abbreviations. If you have two surnames, check how the airline asks for them and use the same format on every booking for the trip.

A simpler way to check your trip

Before paying for a change, upload your confirmations to AuditorTravel: it compares names, dates and amounts across each booking and flags anything that does not match with a simple traffic light (๐ŸŸข ๐ŸŸก ๐Ÿ”ด).

You pay once per trip, it's not a subscription you have to remember to cancel.
