I already paid and now suspect it's a scam: what to do

You've already made the payment and it's only now hitting you: the hotel isn't answering, the booking reference doesn't show up anywhere, or someone just told you that listing already scammed another traveler. The frustration is understandable, but what you do in the next few hours can be the difference between getting your money back or not.

First, don't panic

The sooner you act, the better your odds of stopping or recovering the payment. Most banks and platforms have deadlines for disputes, so time matters more than the embarrassment of having fallen for it.

Immediate steps

1. Gather all the evidence before it disappears

Save screenshots of the listing, the full conversation, the payment receipt, and any emails, before the scammer deletes the listing or blocks you.

2. Contact your bank or card issuer for a chargeback

If you paid by credit or debit card, request a chargeback or dispute the charge. The sooner you do it, the better: many banks allow between 60 and 120 days, but it's best not to wait.

3. Report it to the platform you booked through

If it was through Booking, Airbnb, or an airline, report the fraud directly on the platform. Many have refund policies or specific guarantees for fraudulent bookings, but only if the payment was made within the official system.

4. File the relevant report

Report it to the police or your country's consumer protection agency. It won't always get your money back, but it creates a formal record that can support your bank dispute and helps stop the scammer from operating without consequences.
