Airport currency exchange: the rate and fees worth checking
You arrive, you need cash for the first transfer and a currency exchange booth appears in the terminal. It is practical, but two things are worth checking before you exchange: the real rate and the fee.
What to look at before exchanging
Buy and sell rates
Exchange booths post two prices, and the gap between them is part of their profit. Compare with the day's reference rate to know what it really costs you.
Fees and fixed charges
Some charge a fee or a fixed amount even if the sign says 'no commission'. Ask exactly how much you will receive before handing over the money.
How to save
Exchange only what you need
For the first hours a small amount of cash is usually enough. Afterwards you can compare options in the city or use a card when it makes sense.
Keep the receipt
Ask for the receipt showing the amount handed over, the rate applied and the total received. If something doesn't match, you have something to dispute with.
